What I Am Doing on Saturday

The cashier today raised her eyebrow at me today when I plopped the My Little Pony pinata up next to the till. Then with horror she said “Please don't tell me you are having a birthday party this close to Christmas!?!” Well, yes, actually I am. You see, my daughter didn't have the choice to plan her birthdate. As luck had it, she was born three days before Christmas. She is my lovely Christmas baby. Guess what? She also deserves to have a birthday party just as much as every other child on this planet and I refuse to short change her just because her birthday falls in a very busy and money strapped time of the year. So, yes, I am buying her a My Little Pony pinata for her party.

On Saturday my house will be filled to the gills with roughly 15 invited children and probably most of their parents. We will eat pizza, play party games, have the My Little Pony pinata stuffed with sweets, dance, and have cake. I am also baking the cake. My daughter will be deliriously happy. I might be certifiably insane by the end of the party. However, the strain of organizing a party near Christmas is a small price to pay for the smiles I will receive on Saturday. I think that is a very fair trade.

That's so sweet. My boyfriend's sister was born on the 23rd and we always try to make an effort to make sure her day is exclusively birthday themed :-)

Good for you. My birthday is the 23rd, and I was rarely given a party when young especially near to my actually birthday. Presents were always lumped together and I hated it. Hope your dd enjoys her party.

I can so relate to this. My birthday is 6th January and people are often miserable and penniless when it rolls around and make their excuses why they can't do anything or buy you a present. Even the fact they've been busy over Christmas is an excuse not to get you a card. And that's just family.

Every person deserves to have their birthday celebrated in some way so it's utterly right you do a party. Monkey is off to a football party for one of his friends on Saturday and he can't wait. His friend would be gutted if he couldn't have a party just cos it's near Christmas.

You are right! She deserves a birthday party just as much as the kids born in June! Have fun!!

Cool! She definitely deserves to have her birthday be just as special as any other kid. Birthdays are so incredibly special - she's lucky that you're sensitive to that and making her birthday a big deal despite the impending holidays. Drink copiously once the kids leave.

Good for you! And I hope she gets none of that "Here's a birthday and Xmas present rolled into one" cheap-ass stuff either.

I used to work with a woman who was born on 12/24. In some families the 24th is already part of Christmas. To solve the dilemma they celebrated her 1/2 birthday (6/24) so that she didn't get lost in the shuffle of Christmas. The family always sang Happy Birthday to her on the 24th and she got one small birthday present, but the kids party, the cake, and fun stuff was done on the half birthday. She loved it!

I think I love you - I have a birthday near Christmas and it really upsets me (still even at very old) that people seem to think I should not celebrate and combine it with Christmas when they with their mid year birthdays get Christmas and birthday

Good on you!

Tell that sweet great granddaughter of mine that her granny says for her to have a wonderful birthday. I'm glad the box with her birthday present arrived in time. I will call and sing happy birthday to her on the day.In the meantime, just don't get stressed out yourself. This too will pass. Hope "The Man" doesn't get snowbound in Germany.

Hugs and kisses to all.

I am impressed. Mr6's birthday is three days after Christmas and, I confess, every year I tell him that 'maybe he can have a party next year'. Every year we celebrate, but not with a full-on party. We wouldn't do one every year anyway, but I"m thinking he's definitely due. Next year.

She's the 22nd?! Me too! Tell her she's a very lucky lady, and in splendid company. And she only has to write one lot of thank you letters....

Plus anyone who gives her one joint present gets struck off the friend/relation list immediately.

And seriously well done you for throwing a party. My parents used to take us all to the theatre and call it a "birthday" treat, but we all knew what it was really. Some things scar....!

She definitely deserves a party! I grew up with a "holiday" birthday and it sometimes did overshadow my birthday, so I'm glad you aren't letting that happen. :)
